Today I am thankful for getting Izzo-ed in March Madness.
I am actually pretty pissed off at it, but I can’t help but get a huge laugh out of it though! My bracket is shot, but my guts hurt from laughing so hard.
Two nights ago Nick and I were texting each other about the NCAA tournament. The texting was about how I had Michigan State winning the whole tournament. I’ve been completely oblivious to college basketball this year so I totally guessed at everything when filling out my bracket. I thought I had picked a pretty big underdog in Michigan State, little did I know that approximately half of the people in my pool also picked Tom Izzo’s squad.
When Nick asked what my logic was I said something along the lines of “I’m tired of being Izzo-ed yet again this year.” That was pretty close anyways, there may have been an expletive or two… 🙂 Nick’s response is “And you will again when they lose in the Sweet 16…”
I love the guy, I really do. He’s a blast to listen to during interviews, has a great sense of humor and seems to be a solid values guy. The dude’s a Yooper, how can you go wrong?
So here’s the deal… Every freaking year Michigan State is the one college that I ALWAYS get wrong!!! Whether I pick them to over or under perform they always do the exact opposite.
- 2012 they’re a 1 seed and I pick them to do awesome and they blow up early.
- 2013 they’re a 3 seed and I pick them to go far and they don’t.
- 2014 I see a trend and pick them to exit early as a 4 seed but then they decide to over perform and get to the Elite 8.
- 2015 they’re a 7 seed and I expect them to get a win or two and then be out… They go to the Final Four.
So this year I pick them to win the whole thing… They lose in one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history. Izzo-ed yet again, yet this time in even more spectacular fashion than ever before! not even making it to the Sweet 16? Well played Izzy, well played.
And that’s why I’m thankful for getting Izzo-ed this March… Nick and I had a blast with it! I was on a very important business call when my phone buzzed. I glanced down and saw the notification that Michigan State had just been upset and it took all the willpower I had to stop myself from bursting out laughing while on my call. Before I could finish my call there was Nick buzzing my cell. As soon as I was off my call I responded back with call that consisted of non-stop laughter. We had a blast talking smack about the game and sharing in the misery of my March Madness bracket. It was a brother moment that we will remember forever, just like the Willis McGahee hit of 2003.
