Day 39 – Thankful for Jenn’s Grit

06 Nov

Today I am thankful for Jenn’s grit.

Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” – Angela Duckworth

Imagine if one day you were asked by your boss to take on the challenge of uprooting from your normal life and essentially moving to a new area a couple of hours away in order to manage a new location for 6 to 8 weeks.  In addition to that you are also continuing several of your current responsibilities.  Oh yeah, you are also asked to help recruit and screen the next manager of that location.  How would you respond?

Jenn’s response when asked, “No problem.”  And it wasn’t just lip service.  Over the past couple of weeks she’s been putting in well over 10 hour days keeping everything rolling in the right direction.  She tackles each challenge with a smile, never complains, and keeps pushing toward her goal.  She has incredibly high standards for herself and continues to live into them even though it means more work or harder work.

Throughout these past couple of weeks she’s continued smiling, has stayed focused, and keeps pushing incredibly hard.  In every conversation she immediately focuses on how I’m doing, and always downplays how tiring the days have been for her, how difficult it is to balance her life at this pace, and how challenging it has been to keep all the plates spinning.

So how is she able to keep going at this pace?  Grit.  She has long term goals and knows that experiences like this continue to shape her future.  She understands that trying times like this are what mold her for increased future success.  She knows that if she keeps pushing herself to this goal she re-affirms her ability to hit any goal she focuses on.

Today I am thankful for her grit in a couple of ways.  She’s leading by example for her team members and showing them what exceptional work and pride in her work look like.  The amount of progress she is making is fantastic and is allowing me to stay focused in other areas that need the focus.  Lastly, seeing her pour every ounce of energy into completing the task at hand is motivational for me.  Her example helps me push harder to try to match her efforts.  I am thankful for Jenn’s grit.

Thanks!!!
